Chapter Two

It was as though the sky had listened to our plans, and consented to behave well for them. When we left our favorite cafeteria a few blocks from our home, there was only a vast stretch of blue above us – not a cloud in sight – and the sun beaming brightly from its corner of the sky. We couldn't have hoped for better.

James squinted up at the sun, smile soft but sincere on his face. “See?” he said, putting his arm around my waist. “I knew it would be a good day today.”

“It would be a good day if it was raining sheets,” I assured him, already beginning our slow walk towards the bus stop. “Neither of us is busy. We've got all day. What could possibly go wrong?”

“Don't jinx it,” he admonished me lightly, his eyes a warm twinkle in his handsome face. “For all we know, they'll be sold out of ice-cream or something now.”

“At Central Park? Fat chance.”

I had run to the city at the end of my teenage years, and now I was 30. Throughout my entire adult life, James had been my pillar – my rock. Even when things weren't romantic between us, he had supported me like this. He made me laugh; he kept me afloat.

With my spare hand that wasn't holding his, I turned the jewelry box over in my pocket. I would do it today, I told myself. I would finally pop the question.

After all, it really was long overdue. He had deserved an official commitment from me long ago. Had it not been for my childish infatuation with Sam continuing into my adult years, I probably would have asked him a long time ago – or he might have asked me. I couldn't complain about how things had unfolded, though. I may not have asked him to marry me yet, but things had still turned out okay.

More than okay, actually.

Maybe it had been a stretch to imagine us rowing, but we were taking a seat on the grassy banks of the park just as I had imagined. With the weather so
